Gone Bamboo has several different usages or meanings.
The primary meaning describes a traveler who arrives at a destination and becomes so enchanted by the new surroundings they drop everything they own, quit their job and life style, and never leave- adapting to and blending in with the local or island way of life. Think of Hawaii but you never left.
Another is for someone who prefers to travel or live a more natural existence with the forest, jungles, mountains, on the water, or in the islands. These are the full time (or at least in their minds they are) hikers, backpackers, river rats, sailors, surfers, beach bums, and all that support them in their most worthy endeavors.
And the most extreme 100%, is someone who just drops everything and disappears into nature living off the grid. Not sure what to say- I like a hot shower now and then.
These travelers and folks have Gone Bamboo.
While living on St. Thomas USVI, an islander from Dominica named Martin told us about the origin of Gone Bamboo. It was a term used by the military to describe the GI's that retired or finished their military service and stayed over seas in the South Pacific- disappearing and living out their life in a foreign environment.
